Mariamjvari State Nature Reserve
Mariamjvari State Nature Reserve is located in the north-east of Sagarejo region.The Nature Reserve was established in 1959. Its total area is 1040 ha. Mariamjvari State Nature Reserve is far from c. Tbilisi in 60 km. The main reason of establishment of the Nature Reserve is protection-preservation and making scientific researches of the Caucasian relict, Caucasian pine-tree. Climate: the lower zone of the Nature Reserve is characterized by mild warm climate, the middle zone by middle climate, and the upper zone by cold climate. It represents moderate cold climate region of forest. Many years average temperature is in January – 16, -17 0C, and in August +32, 34 0C. Average yearly amount of precipitations is 744 mm. Relief: the Nature Reserve is mainly represented by mountainous and hilled relief. Soils: the soil of the Nature Reserve is made of clay, marls and sand-oligocenes. Hydrologic network: we don’t meet watery rivers on the territory of the Nature reserve, we mainly meet the dried wide ravine basins. Flora: here are distributed nearly 50 kinds of trees and bushes. We mainly meet the wood plants of the following kinds: beech, oak, horbeam, and pine-tree. Understory is represented by berries: cornelian cherry, medlar, hawthorn, hazel, blackberry and etc. Fauna: we meet the following kinds of mammals on the territory of Nature Reserve: deer, bear, marten, badjer, wild cat, fox, hare, Caucasian squirrel. We also meet approximately 34 kinds of birds: Caucasian chaffinch,
blackbird, wren, common wood-pigeon, hoopoe, cuckoo, black kite, tawny owl, green woodpecker, sparrowhawk and etc.
